RARE WAYNESBORO PETER GRUMBINE CLOCK GOES TO AUCTION

Chambersburg, PA. A rare local clock will be going up for auction next week in Chambersburg. Peter Grumbine (1806-1867) was a well known early clockmaker of Waynesboro PA and one of the tall case clocks he built (specifically in 1834) is being auctioned online through December 16th.

Originally, Peter Grumbine was born in Maryland to Johannes Krumbine of Lancaster PA and Sophia Weber. He married Anna E Summerville and had 3 children.
He was first documented in Washington Township, Franklin County PA on an 1827 tax record as a silversmith. For the next 20 years he worked as a clockmaker and watchmaker. The Waynesboro Village Record newspaper carried many of Grumbine’s advertisements for his clockworks establishment on East Main St. in Waynesboro across from the Saddler’s Shop of William P. Weagly. He later served as the township secretary under the Representative Citizenship from 1862-1866. He died on April 5, 1867 in Waynesboro and is buried at the Greenhill Cemetery. The only known examples of Grumbine’s clocks are showcased at the Renfrew Museum in Waynesboro.

Now for the first time in many years, one of these rare tall case clocks will be available to the general public! Hurley Auctions of Greencastle, PA is honored to conduct the auction of one of Peter Grumbine’s early clocks.

Matt Hurley of Hurley Auctions stated “I’ve never seen one of these clocks for sale in all of my 30+ years as an auctioneer. It being so local to us is definitely a momentous occasion!”

The auction is being held online now through December 16th and will include an entire estate of beautiful antiques and primitives including signed letters from Presidents’ Coolidge and Hoover. The auction may be viewed at  www.hurleyauctions.com and items will be available for public inspection December 15th 4-6PM at 1201 Arbor Ridge Rd., Chambersburg PA 17201.
